MIPPA in Numbers

Since its passage in 2008, the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) has made significant improvements to the lives of vulnerable older adults.

Under MIPPA, states, territories, and the District of Columbia received funding to help low-income Medicare beneficiaries apply for two benefits that make Medicare affordable—the Medicare Part D Low-Income Subsidy (LIS/Extra Help) and the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). MIPPA funding is also used to provide Part D counseling to Medicare beneficiaries who live in rural areas, and to promote the new Medicare prevention and wellness benefits.

Here’s what MIPPA has achieved thus far:

480,000 individuals counseled

MIPPA grantees have counseled over 480,000 older adults and younger adults with disabilities about Part D, Medicare’s preventive benefits, and how they can save money on Medicare costs. Roughly half of those counseled live in rural areas. Read more
